Israel is a land of mountains. Many of them have deep spiritual significance.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people both now and forevermore.
Psalm 125.2

So Jerusalem is a city surrounded by mountains. Some cities like Denver, Colorado have mountains but few are surrounded by them. The beginnings of the Rocky Mountains in Denver are referred to as the front range. Jerusalem was not built on commerce or industry. The first time (in Genesis) and the last time (in Revelation) we encounter it in the Word of God it is a place of worship. Jerusalem existed as a place to worship God. We see this in the conversation Jesus had with the woman at the well in Samaria. His words, (John 4.21) Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
The worship of the Father is no longer confined to Jerusalem but the mountains still surround it and stand as an example of God's abiding presence around His people. He has us surrounded! Jerusalem's mountains tell us this. If you know Jesus you are experiencing this!

Shalom!
